On Desperation

Desperation is the key to most accomplishments in life.
Whatever man does, he does out of desperation - to overcome the utter hopelessness of a situation, or to eliminate the possibility of a worse tomorrow. Never have I seen man succeed without an element of desperation in his dreams.

When you see him, you can feel it in the way he holds himself, the way it carries over to the most ordinary things in life. The thirst, the raw want shines through his eyes. It shows in the set of his jaw to the frown marring his features. He believes that whatever he does out of this crazy desperation will get him out of his personal hell. His energy flows into others. And at some point, it makes the world work in his favour.
I want to be that person. The desperate one. The one who wins.

The Cat with the Broken Tail

One day, a little girl of sixteen was all alone at home.
She wanted a screwdriver to open up some gadget.
She stood on tiptoe to reach up to the shelf.
She spread her fingers in search of the screwdriver.
Her hand found something. Something pricked her hand.
When she drew her hand back again, it was bleeding.
Upon further inspection, she found that a little porcelain toy cat’s tail had scratched her fingers. Deep.
She pulled out the cat with the broken tail and stared at it.

I was a gift from her old, old friend. She sat down on the ground and let a single tear escape.

"What are you scared of ?"

"What are you scared of?"
While talking to some really old friend of mine, he seemed to have picked up on my gloom and had asked me about it. He then proceeded to ask me other weird questions. But this one question got me thinking a lot over.

Well.. Here goes..

I'm scared of the fact that no one in the world is indispensable.

Every person can be replaced, more often than not, by people better than them. I'm scared that it is true.

I'm scared that the world might implode some day.

The way the world might just... not exist some day.

I'm scared of how fragile butterflies are.

I'm scared about how the butterflies keep reminding me of how fragile human hearts are.

I'm scared of saying 'I love you'.

The way I stopped saying it to maybe more than just five people in life.
I'm scared that some day I will be all alone.
I'm scared of the fact that one day, I might wake up from bed and not be satisfied with life.

I'm scared for all those people who harm themselves.

I'm scared that I might never be able to be the person I wanted to be.
I'm scared that the butterfly I hold will either fly away or die.
I'm too scared to touch one.

I'm scared that there will be a larger 'to read' pile of books in my life, than a 'favourites' pile.

I'm scared that if I am too picky, I'll be left with nothing.
The way beggars can't be choosers.
The very same way someone who loves you cannot say it to your face without a little caution.

I'm scared that people will break my trust.

Trust crumbles the way trust does.
I'm scared that one day, everyone I know might no longer exist.

I'm scared that I won't be able to achieve what I set out to achieve.

Scratch that. I'm terrified that I won't be able to achieve what I set out to achieve.

I'm scared that some day, I might not be able to make the ones I love, happy..

All that and more.. It is all about irrational fears and insecurities.

The Umbrella Story

The story of how I now ought to prefer colourful patterns as opposed to the repetitive black and whites that I used to... An indication of how I people (me) grow out of their comfort zones.. Maybe jump around a little, and finally trust people.

This one time, shopping for all the back-to-school supplies with my mother, we came across a small store. What attracted me to the store was the display of umbrellas. It was a store that sold only umbrellas and rain-coats. I convinced myself that I was in desperate need of an umbrella, since "Mom! All my friends now have umbrellas. No one really wears rain coats anymore!" Yeah, mom. Like you didn't see through THAT.
So, the store..
It had these wonderful glass displays full of umbrellas and they were all black, grey or white, all with different patterns. I entered the store with my mother. I started looking for an umbrella that I would like. The shopkeeper, trying to be helpful, fished out all the colourful ones he had. Zazzy colours. Stripes, flames, polka dots.. you name it. He was a little disappointed to see that I didn't like them one bit.
I asked him to show me the black and grey ones. He looked a little puzzled and said "Beta, those are for all the boring people.. All the kids use these colourful ones! Why don't you choose something from these, here?" but I insisted.
He finally showed me some of the black and grey ones. I found one that I really liked. It was black.. and had grey checks. Uncommon. Things that don't stand out in a crowd. Good enough to blend in, unless someone looked closely. I ended up buying that one.

After I went home, I enthusiastically showed it to my grandfather. He asked me why I liked it so much. I didn't really have an answer at that time. I just said I liked it.
After two days of thinking about grandfather's question, I framed an acceptable response. Well, acceptable  by babyish standards, of course. I was much younger, then, you see.
I told him what the shopkeeper had said as well, right after my 'answer'.
My answer (I don't remember much.. or I'd rather pretend that I do not remember..) consisted something along the lines of  "Tata, I don't want to stand out in a crowd. It is scary. People will look at you and point you out. All your flaws.. wide open... for the whole wide world to see..! How can anyone want that? By buying an inconspicuous, yet pretty umbrella, I'm just trying to make sure that people who see me for me will be able to find my faults. That way, people I give permission to, are the only ones who can break my walls.."
He asked me if I could keep a secret, then.. to which I said yes, of course. Being a quiet and calm person, it kinda came naturally to me.
He then sat me down after dinner, and told me things that I will never forget. He told me about how I must not let what people think of me define me.. of how people always judge a book by its cover and how people notice colour. He told me that colour and pattern were things people are attracted to and that even when faults were found, they would overlook them. I didn't believe it, then.. I somehow do not believe it now, either. People are mean. They do not overlook faults. They cannot accept things that are beyond them. They just..Believe. Naive as it may be, the word believe does, in fact have the word 'lie' in it.. (Looks like a thought for another day, though..)
By using a colourful exterior, you can try covering an ugly interior.. But then, it works the other way round, too, doesn't it? Cliché. The colourful, beautiful interior, covered by the dull greys.. More than enough movies on that concept.
Then what about the beautiful interior.. The one shuttered by multiple layers of black? What can be done to the walls that have been re-erected after a betrayal, or two.. or a hundred? The walls that might never crumble again?
See? People don't notice. They just go about their business and leave the rest. And that is a good thing. The last thing someone shuttered needs, is people prying.
There are more things my grandfather told me that day.. about how not all people are like that.. etc. etc. Maybe. Maybe not. It ain't my life's mission to find out the truth behind those words. I hope they are true.. and that there are people out there who care. But that doesn't make much difference anyway.

Well.. after that little talk, I never told of that piece of advice to anyone. He also told me to use the black-grey umbrella until I was comfortable with using a colourful one.

I use the black-grey one till this day.

Maybe some day, I will visit that shop once again and ask the shopkeeper to give me the most colourful, flashy, pretty umbrella he has and start using it. Maybe then, I will be able to throw away the black-grey one.. The one, owing to whose small size, travels with me in my bag almost always, during the rains. The one that shields me from people.. the one that shields me from.. Me.
Well, then... That's the story. Off to bed, kids.

P.S. Apologies to the black-grey umbrella. I love you. And you are absolutely BEA-utiful.

Heat.

I believe that heat is the answer to almost all things in the world.
I will agree, though, that a burn can not be treated with fire, metaphorically speaking, of course. But isn't the cold just absence of heat?
Men are fond of playing with fire, knowing it will burn them. Our world is divided into two kinds of people, in my view. Ones that jump into the fire without a care in the world – the ones who think they know what they will do, once out the fire, and Two, people who stand on the edge and peer down into the fire, thinking of ways to avoid it all together.
What I do, is think of ice and step in, knee deep into my personal fire.

There is almost nothing a warm hug can not cure. People can some times just break down during a hug. They might be the big, scary “I’m the tough one” outside, but when they’re truly alone, only a warm hug can do any thing worthwhile.
There is no such thing as fake warmth. Anger, lust, love; all of them can be faked – and easily enough, yes. But real, true warmth that comes from one’s heart can never be faked.
There are people who might think different. Heat can sometimes, they say worsen things. Ice cream melts in the heat. But you enjoy one only because of the heat.
Heat, is but a higher degree of warmth. While some might oppose everything I’ve said about warmth and heat, I still believe that heat is comforting and can almost always cure a broken heart…

A/N.:
Taking/took a break from the challenges. I just don't feel like typing them up.
I'll edit this one later. For sure. There's so much more I have to say, but my head isn't letting me form coherent sentences. Too tired. Later.

Day One - The Writing Challenge

Prompt: Don't hope that it was just a dream.

Warm sunlight shone on small parts of my face through the foliage of the tree. I lean against the rough bark and rest my head against it, scraping my elbow, taking in the scent of the flowers, the grass and the clean, fresh air.
I had been reading my favorite book for the last four hours. Last night, I had fought with him again. Even the fights were getting routine, now. That was when I decided that I wanted to spend some time alone. This place was where I used to sit, as a kid. The tree I am now sitting under, was the one I had planted. It was the only one that grew, out of the six I had planted. It is beautiful, yet painful, how time flies by...
This little haven of mine smelled as beautiful as it looked. It filled me with pride and happiness. It evoked fond memories of little dolls that I made, the hundreds of books that I read, the times I just sat and thought through things, all whilst sitting under this very tree. And now, I was back, book in hand.
White and pink daisies and blood red roses, some white flowers with a strong perfume and velvety grass. This lone tree stood in between this garden of sorts. Butterflies flitted from flower to flower and the gentle breeze ruffled the leaves of the tree, whispering secrets of the world. I close my eyes and take in the warmth, reveling in this peace. It is hard to come by, these days, with my marriage and the job hunting and all the meaningless quarrels.

The hot sunlight was burning my back. Quickly, I sat up, my eyes still closed, wishing for a little more time before returning to my chores. I could hear the butterflies flying around. Wait, did I just HEAR them flying? And the smell of mud and leaves wafted into my nose. That was intense.

I opened my eyes only to find that my vision was tinged with blue. What had gone wrong with the world?! Four hours into a book, and I haven't noticed something happening?  I was alarmed and I tried to get up but somehow, I ended up on all fours. I was a little confused. Okay, a lot confused. So then, I decided that I'd just go home and look into the mirror to see if something had happened to my contacts. I stood and stretched. I felt my muscles bunching, and a weird sound of hard material scraping against another. When I glanced at myself, I had sprouted scales. What is going on!? Would I have wings as well, then? Scales and wings go together, somehow...

I 'willed' my wings to open, and shockingly, yes, I did have wings. Light green, leathery wings, ribbed with bone.
What was that book I was reading anyway? I flapped my wings experimentally, causing a great gust of wind to flatten the grass around me. Oh wow. I could fly if I wanted to! That was a nice thing...I think. In any case, I still had to get home.

I took off from the ground carefully. See, I still hadn't figured out what I had become. And I was something with wings. Powerful wings.. and scales..and I have no clue as to how flying with wings is.

I fluttered my wings and rose a few inches into the air immediately, landing back on the grass with a thud, when I stopped. This would need some getting-used-to.
Slowly, though, I did manage to soar into the clear blue sky. It was beautiful, being able to see the world from up above here. It was no wonder, man wanted to fly so bad. Poor Icarus and his wings! I was a million times better than him! I didn't melt my wings away - yet.
I analyzed my emotions and my thoughts. I was never a proud person, and still, after i got these scales and wings, I... There's something terribly wrong. Something has changed. Since when did people start sprouting wings and scales after a short nap, huh?

As I flew across the sky, over a forest, Wait, forest? Where'd that come from? I felt something stabbing me in my belly. It hurt so bad, that I descended quickly. I came back down to the ground and lay on my side, one wing folded against the ground, the other, protectively around my body. That was when I heard people shouting near me.
" FALLEN DRAGON! COME. QUICK!!"

And there were footsteps near me. I was surrounded.
" Great aim. The creature looks hurt.", a man said, with a grin.
" We'd better pull out the arrows. We have to train it... We are short of dragons as it is.", said another.
" I've never seen a dragon give up so easily..."

Three things made their way to my mind, over the fog of pain. One - They called me a dragon. Was that what I was? Two - These people hurt me. With arrows. What IS this place?! And Three - They'll TRAIN me? What FOR?!

There was a faint tugging sensation at my belly, and then searing pain that subsided after a few minutes.
"Shouldn't have used so many arrows, Ka, Young dragon.. I feel bad already..."

If I really was a dragon, that'd mean I could breathe fire, right? That's cool. Hot, actually. I don't want to get trained. I want to fly away. Fly back home! They can't keep me captive like this!

I heard the men discussing something about how they ought to move me, since they'd wounded me so bad. At least SOMEONE'S feeling guilty. Cool metal rings were fastened to all my limbs. They were a little too big for me, and so it felt really uncomfortable. It was like lifting a great weight every time I moved. The rings had long metal chains, ending in bigger rings. What they were for, I knew not.
Two men from the group turned and walked back into the forest and took out some kind of flute and started playing it. He couldn't play at all! It was the most horrible music ever. But by the looks of it, only I was able to listen to it. The people around me, three tending to my wounds, and five standing guard, were either unable to hear it, or were expertly capable of hiding their disgust.
The people who were attempting to heal me were chattering away. Evidently, they were as new to this world, as I was, myself. So, in order to know a little more, I listened in. No, I don't usually eavesdrop.

"Yeah, I lived in the city. I went drinking at a pub with my girlfriend last night, and when I next woke up, I was here. It was weird. And now, they're making us hunt dragons!"

"I've heard tales. I've been here two days before you came here, Ka. The elders talk only at the campfire at night! In the mornings, they're more like shriveled up mummies, with dead looks. They were saying, the other day, that dragons were extremely hard to find. They said that, in this  world, people are brought in from the other worlds and turned into different people or animals, depending on what they did before coming here. They mentioned that dragons are the most precious, and if we trained them, they'd be with us. I still don't understand why anyone would want to be near giant, smelly, fire-breathing reptiles. I'm not saying they ain't majestic..or..or..beautiful, in a way...but..." Yayy.. someone thinks that I look good!

I looked at the guy named Ka. He was about my age, I think... and looked as terrified as I first felt. He looked good. Pity he already had a girlfriend.. Where am I going with these thoughts? I am now a dragon, and I need to get out of here! Right NOW.

When all the arrows were removed, the pain lessened. But before I could feel too happy about it, a shadow passed overhead, blocking the sun for a few seconds. Two massive dragons landed on either side of me. They were brown, and they looked alike. What? The men said something to them and they grabbed two each of the big metal rings to the chain and started to ascend.
I opened my wings instinctively and found that there was an arrowhead lodged between my shoulder and wing. Painful. They HAVE to remove it...and soon, or I'll eat them up for dinner tonight. I 'flew' with the two other dragons to some place where the ground was bare and there were straw huts. I saw what the other guy had explained to Ka. Old men and no women. A bit weird, you'd think. Oh well...

When I landed, Ka came over to my side. Looks like he's noticed that arrow. Good. I snarled at him and he quivered a little. Satisfying. He attempted to dislodge the arrow in my wing, but he was just not that skilled. Not many were.. So this Ka guy brings a few more people to me and explains to them about the arrow.

"Ka, if you're that gentle with the dragon, she'll die of the pain of the wound when she flies. It is much better that you pull it out with force and let it heal.. It will hurt for about a minute, but there'll be no permanent damage!" Poor Ka was trying to be gentle...And then, after he had pulled out the arrow, I was made to sit in the middle of the tiny village, facing the old men, till nightfall. Then, some lads lighted up a fire and that was when the old men stirred. They talked among themselves and called out to the hunters who had wounded me. They had stony looks, when they went forward - almost loathing, if I may. After long discussions, they decided that I was too 'young' to cause trouble and so, one man would be able to manage me. They wanted to give the newcomer a chance. And so, just like that, Ka was appointed my caretaker...like I needed one, really... but it does please me that its Ka and not any of those other men.

I was pretty happy. My wounds healed miraculously fast and Ka was good company. He kept rambling on about his life before this...this.. change. It made me homesick. I wanted to tell him to let me go...but I had no voice, except maybe the fire. I could melt rock. Oh yayyy. It is nice to watch, believe me.
I went hunting and I flew in the skies. I had a nice life. I don't remember how long I was there.. maybe a fortnight, or longer. I needed to get back, but I didn't know how.
I fought in tiny battles, and I flew with Ka to the mountains for some days. I liked it here. I don't want to leave anymore. This place was good.. beyond my wildest imaginations!
Is is weird for a dragon to fall in love with a human? Well, just wondering.. not that I like Ka..

One afternoon, I was resting with Ka leaning against my folded wing, when I drifted into a slumber. He always held me like one would, a little girl, while we slept. The hot afternoon sun burnt my face as I woke up.

We were resting, remember? What's with the sun.. always burning me up like this..?!

When I opened my eyes, my vision was too bright and I felt light. I felt a little dizzy as well. It was back to normal again, was it? Was I the dragon, or was I human? Oh goodness. My identity. And... Ka? What about him? He seemed so real. What now?
What now? What do I mean, "what now?".. like a kid lost in a dream..

Slightly disoriented, I walked back home, taking a shortcut through a tiny forest. I saw a man standing at the end of the forest, looking here and there, searching for something. When I went closer, I recognized him at once. I threw myself at him, delighted, shouting "Ka!!!"

When I pulled back, he looked puzzled. Like, obviously. It was me who was the dragon. I would have been some random mute beast to him, for all the good it did me...

" Hey. Sorry. You looked like someone I knew.."
" Yeah, no problem at all."
Awkward pause.. great.
And I went on my way again.

MOON EYES

The Meeting:

The concrete pavement was deserted, hard and cold. She walked on this very pavement. She knew it. She'd seen it...Felt it, a hundred times, in her dreams. The familiar, warm light, from the lantern hung above on the poles flooded sections of the pavement with circular patches of orange light
She could hear even the rustle of her coat, which she now hugged to her chest. She felt cold, a cold she never had felt before. She walked forward her muffled footfalls amplified by the chill and emptiness around her.
She glanced at the road. Empty. A fear clung to her heart,a fear she never felt before, reasons unknown.
She walked.Faster.
A faint growl sounded from somewhere behind her.She didn't dare look back. She knew, only too well, what would happen....Scared now, she almost ran, trying to find her way out from this seemingly never-ending platform.
She stopped short in her tracks, shocked when she heard the growl from ahead of her. Somehow, she knew this would happen, but she was still surprised...Shocked at her own feelings on seeing the massive creature in front of her.She stood, rooted, staring , wide-eyed at the dark, unlit part of the pavement, unable to meet that intense gaze.
He was there. Right there. She knew. She saw him in her dreams, did she not?
She wished this were a dream too...but she knew it was too vivid to be a dream. She knew, there was no turning back once she was captured by his gaze.
He sat there, silently with his back to her on the pavement, before her. She felt cold, like the cold from the uneven platform was seeping into her through her bare legs. She had tried running away from him, even in her dreams. She tried, now..but somehow, she knew it was inevitable...the things that would happen,soon...She'd not stop now, She took a step, tentatively towards his massive form. He growled.
She opened her mouth to talk, her throat ran too dry. Before she could muster her courage and try again, He turned, just a fraction of an inch towards her.His one gleaming yellow eye focusing on hers...She stood, struck by the beauty, the depth of the countless emotions running under those pair of eyes.
He merely looked into her eyes, until a wry smile touched her parched lips. She knew it. It happened. The countless times she saw it all in her repetitive dreams came true,She knew not,why..She walked towards him, steps now confident. She was so close, she could now feel the warmth off his body. She then took him in her arms, feeling his heart beat and his fur on her face. He felt nice.Despite herself, her fear of his kind, She knew she loved him.
When She released him, He merely got up and walked away into the darkness, without a look back towards the heart he had just captured.

She stood, smiling.
Somehow she felt, she wouldn't see Him again...
Her dreams told her that was false.
She Knew She'd See Him Again.

OLD.....All Those Memories.

Ever heard of  "Old is Gold" ??
Now that I really think back about how long ago it was, it dawned on me that not Everything you think will "be there", actually be there.
When you realize how long ago it was, you are just Reminding yourself about it all.....
Those things you thought would stay , but left without a Trace...
And it will all go on until you let go and think of all those good times,
That keep tugging at the very ends of your Foggy Memories..
Reminding yourself that leaving isn't that bad after all..
It will tug on until you realize what you've left behind.. let go... just fall...
All those dreams that you thought would build up, you will realize that they had no foundations at all...
All those brittle, little, bitter-sweet memories of yours, you will find will finally leave you in peace with yourself.
Cause:
All is Gone.
All is Erased
All Stands Bare
All is in your Memories,
Yet, its All There
All's Not Over..
All Is Filled up...Rich and Happy,
All is Still...In Your memories.

Yet Dull, Beside You I Stood,
Mesmerised into Silence............

Wispy Clouds, A Bright Moon,
Yet Dull, Beside You I Stood,
Happy And Content, Holding Your Hand..................

Yet Dull, Beside You I Stood,

A RED BALLET SHOE

Alongside the fire......
A dance in a ballet shoe,

A book on a cold window sill,
Untouched, Unread...

A still sheet of Music,
Ruffled by my breath...

A piano, Dusty and Old,
Unplayed from years Unknown....

A Creaky, Old, Wooden Floorboard,
Bringing back memories of Shiny, Black Polished Shoes....

A Yellowing, Ancient Tablecloth, Lacey, and perfect,
Convincing me of Fairy tales and Princesses.....

A Wind chime sounding in the Room,
Now, I can Hear Your Flute......

A Rusty Old Lock,
That was Never meant to be opened....

A Clock still Ticking,
Thinking " How Long it has been"......

A Little Shiver Down My spine,
Reminding Me of the Past.....

A Rustle of the Curtain,
And your Sweeping Gown.....

A Musty, Old Bookshelf,
Oh.. the Books You've Read......

A Tingle Down My spine,
Reminding Me; You're Gone......

Alongside The Fire....I still Remember,
A Dance In a Red Ballet Shoe.........
